What Kind of Paint Do You Use on Vinyl Purses?

Painting text or a design on vinyl can be a daunting task because of the slick quality of the surface texture. Silkscreen in is commonly used on such surfaces because of its flexible bonding abilities.

  1. Types

    • Silkscreen inks come in a variety of colors and five distinct types--solvent, water, solvent plastisol, water plastisol and UV curable. Each results in a different effect from a smooth and shiny finish, to a puffy soft paint finish.

    Safety

    • Water-based silkscreen ink is the safest of the inks with the least amount of toxic fumes.

    Application

    • To apply silkscreen ink to vinyl, it can be hand-painted with brushes or printed through a silkscreen that is reusable for multiple prints.

    Time Frame

    • Silkscreen ink dries rapidly. If you use a small amount of water to hand-paint vinyl, it may take a little longer than 10 minutes to dry completely, If you use it straight from the jar without diluting, the drying time is about five minutes.

    Other Materials

    • Due to its superior flexibility, silkscreen ink can also be used on paper, cardboard, plastics, glass, metal and fabrics, including nylon and cotton.

    Cleanup

    • Water-based silkscreen ink can be cleaned with water and soap. Do not let it dry on brushes or screens.
