Calicivirus Vaccine Side Effects

An adverse reaction to the calicivirus vaccine is rare but can occur. It is important to be aware of potential side effects, but it is also important to remember the benefits of the vaccine might outweigh the risk. You should discuss your cat's vaccination needs with your veterinarian.

  1. Lameness

    • Kittens vaccinated with the live feline calicivirus vaccine can have joint pain, muscle weakness and fever. These symptoms can occur one to three weeks after vaccination.

    Sneezing

    • Intranasal vaccines for calicivirus can cause mild respiratory symptoms such as sneezing and watery eyes for several days after the vaccination.

    Sarcoma

    • Some calicivirus vaccines contain an adjuvant, a component to stimulate the immune system. Cats vaccinated with this type of vaccine are five times more likely to develop a vaccine associated fibrosarcoma (cancer).

    Vaccine Failure

    • The calicivirus has mutated and many vaccines that are currently on the market provide little or no protection against these new strains. Care should be taken, even with vaccinated cats, to limit their exposure to other cats.

    Additional Concerns

    • There are several side effects that can occur when any vaccine is administered. These can include pain and swelling at the injection site, depression in kittens, allergic reactions and even immune diseases.
