Description of a Three Toed Sloth

The word sloth derives from the Middle English word "slowthe," which translates to "slow." It is a perfect name for a creature that takes as long as a month to digest one meal.

  1. Toes

    • The three-toed sloth has three toes on each of its front and hind feet, unlike its close cousin, the two-toed sloth, which does have three on the hind feet but just two on the back.

    Function

    • The three-toed sloth possesses a set of large and curved claws that it uses to climb trees and hang from the branches upside down.

    Size

    • The sloth is no larger than a common raccoon. It can weigh as much as 10 lbs. and reach a length of up to 2 feet, with a short and stubby 3-inch long tail.

    Features

    • The head of a sloth is rounded and the neck seems unnaturally long. The eyes and the ears of the sloth are quite small, which contributes to the animal's poor vision and hearing.

    Coat

    • The sloth has a thick underfur with bristly hair over it. This coat is grayish-brown with lighter yellowish to white fur on the back that has a dark stripe running through it.
