Job Description Associate Pastor

Depending on the size and location of the church, an associate pastor can be anyone from a part-time helper to someone in charge of several ministries.

  1. Title

    • An associate pastor is someone who has separate duties all to themselves, and is likely to be a full-time employee. Such duties might include conducting staff meetings and recruiting volunteers for Sunday school teachers.

    Church Size

    • The duties of an associate pastor depend on the church size and the individual church. If a large church has several associate pastors, each one might focus on a specific area, such as youth outreach.

    Main Duties

    • The main duties of an associate pastor are often running an entire ministry. A ministry in a church usually targets a specific population, such as singles, divorced people and youth. The ministry would need a leader and someone to organize related events for the ministry group. Other duties might include contacting people, setting up events and handling tasks such as producing bulletins.

    Relationship to Senior Pastor

    • The associate pastor will fill in for the senior pastor when he is away. Associate pastors also help fill in for whatever duties the senior pastor can not do.

    Qualifications

    • Associate pastors are often expected to have gone to seminary. Sometimes associate pastors have no religious degree or work toward one while working.
