What Is Mange on a Dog?

Microscopic mites that burrow under dogs' skin are commonly called mange. Causing itching and hair loss, mange is also sometimes referred to as canine scabies; in some cases it can be contagious for humans. Depending on the severity, treatment ranges from none to weeks of prolonged medication.

  1. Types

    • There are three different kinds of mange---demodectic, cheyletiella and sarcoptic---caused by different species of mites.

    Identification

    • The symptoms of dog mange range from red bumps and hairless areas on the dog's skin to severe itching as well as dandruff on the animal's head, neck and back.

    Misconceptions

    • Although in the past motor oil dips have been used to treat dog mange, the oil can be toxic to the animal and should not be used as a remedy.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Injections of Ivermectin, an anti-parasite medication, or insecticide dips such as lyme sulfur or paramite are recommended as well as cortisones to relieve the itching.

    Warning

    • Sarcoptic type mange is contagious to dogs and humans and can be passed along to family members through furniture or beds where the dog sleeps. It cannot survive on humans for more than a few weeks.
