Basic Maths Skills

It is important to have a firm foundation in math to succeed in higher levels of math and science courses. Basic skills include working with numbers and other math tools.

  1. Basic Computations

    • Basic computation skills include addition, subtraction, division and multiplication. You should also comprehend place values, decimal points, fractions and percentages.

    Using a Ruler

    • Understanding how to use a ruler is an important, everyday application of a math skill. Ruler skills require a basic understanding of how to add, count and convert from inches to feet.

    Using a Protractor

    • Protractors are commonly used in the geometry classroom for measuring and creating angles in shapes. When calculating the angles of any shape, it is important to remember that the angles added together will always total 360 degrees; if they do not, remeasure and recalculate.

    Using a Compass

    • Compasses are used to create circles of different sizes. They can also be used to create triangles when a protractor is not available.

    Calculator Skills

    • Calculator skills are commonly used for balancing a checkbook and paying bills. Higher level calculator skills are important in math subjects such as algebra and calculus where complicated formulas need to be computed.
