How Long Is a Drivers Permit Good for in Florida?

The state of Florida offers teen drivers a license in three stages, a Learner's License (similar to other state's driver's permit), an Intermediate License and a Full Privilege License. Parental consent is required for anyone under the age of 18.

  1. Age

    • You must be at least 15 years old to obtain a Learner's License in Florida. You must pass hearing and vision tests.

    Identification

    • Two forms of identification are required, one primary (which includes a birth date) and one secondary. A list of acceptable types of identification is available on the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles website (see Resources).

    Written Test

    • A written test is given to obtain a Learner's License. It consists of 20 questions on road signs and 20 questions on rules of the road.

    Restrictions

    • A new driver with a Learner's License can only drive in daylight hours for the first three months and always with a front-seat passenger older than 21.

    Driving Test

    • After holding a Learner's License for at least one year, and having driven at least 50 hours (10 of the hours at night), you may take a road test. If you pass, you'll obtain an Intermediate License. Full driving privileges are awarded at age 18.

    Renewal

    • How often a license of any type needs to be renewed in Florida depends on the individual's driving record.
