What Is a Block Diagram?
A block diagram is a pictorial representation of an idea or concept. It is used to describe the broad aspect of the connectivity or relationship between things, and rarely includes small details. Because of the limited information on block diagrams, they do not lend themselves to be analyzed or for comprehensive planning.

Functions
-
Block diagrams are used to show general concepts of how something works, such as a product or an organization. They are used as a means of reference, so that those unfamiliar with the process can gain a general understanding. A successful block diagram will be clearly labeled and will identify key steps in the process.
Features
-
Block diagrams can be created by hand on paper or with computer programs. The starting point, as well as the general flow of the information, should be easily recognizable. Some diagrams use different shapes of boxes to denote different aspects or relationships.
-
Engineering Uses
-
Engineers use block diagrams when designing products, such as electronic equipment. Only the major components will be visible on the diagram, because minor things, such as specific wires, are not reflected here.
Organizational Uses
-
Block diagrams can also be used as a means of showing the relationships between departments in an organization or workplace. They commonly depict a chain of command or show the way processes are handled, such as customer complaints.
Samples
-
If you're not sure where to start or even what you should include in your block diagram, several websites provide samples along with instructions on creating effective block diagrams (see Resources).
