- Burning paraffin candles emit carcinogenic matter and chemicals that cause soot deposits. It contains petroleum by-products and additives that inhibit biodegradability; however, occasional use of these candles should not affect you.
- The levels of these chemicals can build up in a closed room to dangerous levels, but you can reduce the risk by making sure the room has proper ventilation.
- Some people may have a reaction to the pollutants from these candles. This reaction can easily be mistaken for indoor allergies or respiratory irritation.
- Although they are more expensive, soy and beeswax candles are better alternatives, as they do not release any harmful air pollutants. They can also last up to 50 percent longer than paraffin candles.
- Remove any melted paraffin wax from fabric by placing paper towels over the wax stain and ironing the paper towels with a hot iron. The wax will melt again and absorb into the paper towels.
