The Motor Car Act of 1951 comprises the primary traffic laws governing the island of Bermuda. The Transport and Control Department (TCD) assists with administering these laws.

    General Information

  1. Within Hamilton, the speed limit is 25 kph/15 mph and 35 kph/21 mph elsewhere. Driving is on the left-hand side of the road. Helmets are required for motorcycles; seat belts are mandatory in cars.

  3. The legal limit under Bermuda Law is 0.08 percent blood alcohol concentration.
  4. Who Can Drive?

  5. Visitors to Bermuda cannot rent a car, only an auxiliary cycle (scooter or moped). The minimum age to ride a scooter is 16.
    Non-residents and guest workers must present work permits, birth certificates and passports. The process includes a medical exam, written test, preliminary learner's license followed by a practical driving exam.

  7. TCD manages all Bermuda drivers' permits, written and practical examinations, mandatory yearly vehicle inspections, enforces road taxes and ensures compliance with insurance provisions.

  9. Avoid the busiest days of Monday and Friday. Queues form before the TCD office opens, so get there early.
