What Do Dwarf Hamsters Eat?

Feeding your pet dwarf hamster a well-balanced diet can make a major difference in its overall happiness and health. A sound diet provided early in life might mean your hamster will have a longer life than one that has to fend for itself in the wild.

In The Wild

A wild dwarf hamster's diet would consist of grains, wild grasses and insects found in its natural desert habitat. It might be able to snack on foods grown by farmers in nearby agricultural fields as well.

Basic Pet Hamster Diet

A scientifically formulated hamster pellet mix contains the basic nutrients needed. For an extra nutritional boost, add a little commercial budgerigar seed mix to its bowl once a week.

Fresh Vegetables And Fruits

Feed small amounts of fresh vegetables and fruits two to three times a week such as beans, broccoli, cabbage or grapes. Avoid watery lettuce such as iceberg; it might cause diarrhea.

Special Treats

Hamsters love monkey chow and dog biscuits. Give once a week for extra protein and necessary tooth-grinding opportunities. A little hard boiled egg can be enjoyed but remove the uneaten egg promptly.

Stress Reducer

Stress in a dwarf hamster can be reduced by supplying a little vitamin B-rich yeast. Feed 1/2 of a dog yeast tablet once a week to avoid illness such as wet-tail, which is usually stress related.
