What Increases Dopamine Production?

Dopamine is an important neurotransmitter in the brain that regulates mood and affects people's concentration and motivation. Low dopamine levels have been linked to attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, Parkinson's disease and many other conditions.

  1. Food

    • Eating foods that contain tyrosine can increase dopamine levels. These include almonds, avocados, bananas, lima beans, and pumpkin and sesame seeds.

    Drugs

    • Cocaine and amphetamines increase dopamine by acting as a reuptake blocker. Adderall, Ritalin and other stimulant-based ADHD medications are effective, since low dopamine levels decrease attention span. Levodopa, used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease, increases dopamine by stimulating receptors.

    Vitamins

    • B vitamins (B6, B9, B12), NADH and omega-3 fatty acids appear to increase dopamine levels.

    Exercise

    • Regular exercise can improve mental health, stimulate dopamine production and improve concentration and mood.

    Sex

    • Sexual intercourse can increase dopamine levels. Low dopamine levels can decrease sex drive.
