Parts of the Brain With Memory

The temporal lobes (TLs) and deep limbic system (DLS) are the parts of the brain involved in human memory. The TLs are responsible for memorizing information, whereas the DLS is in charge of storing emotional memories.

About The Temporal Lobes

The TLs are located on the sides of the head, beneath the temple. To be more precise, they are behind the eyes and slightly above the ears. A major component in the TLs, the hippocampus, encodes and memorizes information. Without the hippocampus, the brain will not be able to memorize new experiences or retrieve old memories.

About The Deep Limbic System

The DLS lies in the center of the brain. Although it is only about the size of a walnut, the DLS contains important components such as the hippocampus and amygdala, which store highly-charged emotional memories, both positive and negative.

Problems Associated With The Temporal Lobes

When the TL activity is off-balance, it can cause memory problems, headaches, dyslexia, anxiety, trouble communicating and mood instability. A severe damage in the TLs can lead to amnesia, serious depression and epilepsy.

Problems Associated With The Deep Limbic System

Problems in the DLS usually result in low motivation, depression, negativity, low libido and cyclic mood disorders.

Ways To Improve These Parts Of The Brain

You can promote TL and DLS function with several methods including music therapy, physical and mental exercise, psychotherapy, brain medications and regular consumption of foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants.
