Define Epson Salt

Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) is a chemical compound composed of magnesium and sulfur. Its chemical formula is MgSO4. Its pH is between 5.5 and 6.5, and it is the cause of sound absorption in seawater.

    • Epsom salts derive their name from the English town of Epsom where the curative waters were first discovered in the early 17th century. Epsom became one of the country's most famous spas.

    • An English doctor, Nehemiah Grew, was the first to analyze the magnesium sulfate on the waters of Epson and to attempt to patent the sale and production of Epsom salts for their health benefits.
