Fuschia Plant Information

Fuchsias, also known as lady's eardrops, are popular springtime garden plants. The flowers attract nectar-eating hummingbirds with their striking floral displays. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Native Range

    • The original Fuchsias species came from Central and South America, Tahiti and New Zealand. Most Fuchsias are grown as annuals and can survive year round in climates warmer than USDA zone 9.

    Description

    • The plants are shrublike and can be grown as single specimen plants in pots or in hedges that reach several feet tall. The leaves are oval and green; the stems are generally red.

    Flowers

    • The pendant flowers come in shades of red, purple, pink and white. Double flowered hybrids have been developed. Most flowers are bi-color.

    Care

    • These flowers like shady conditions with moist, well-draining soil. Fuchsias like cool temperatures and indirect light. They do not like full sun or hot temperatures.

    Uses

    • Fuchsias are an old favorite for window boxes and hanging baskets where the pendant and abundant flowers are highlighted at eye level.
