The Hammond M1 was the first organ designed for home use. Prior to its creation, organs had been designed primarily for use in churches and theaters.

Hammond produced the original M1 organs between 1948 and 1951.

The "M" Series

Hammond's organ series were classified by letter names. The M1 was the first in Hammond's "M" series, followed by the M2, M3 and the "M-100" series.
Sound

The Hammond M1 has a reedy sound similar to the most famous of the Hammond organs, the B3.
Size

The M1, like the other single-number "M" organs, was designed to be a more compact version of a Hammond organ. It was smaller and had fewer keys and synthesizer effects.
