Locations of Brain Functions

The brain is a powerful and fascinating organ composed of 100 billion neurons that are constantly at work. The brain controls every action that we make, whether it be a simple act like eating a sandwich or more complex like writing a story.

Frontal

The cerebral cortex, also called the frontal lobe of the brain, is right under the forehead. It controls consciousness, judgment, emotions, habits and language.

Parietal

The parietal lobe, which is toward the back of the top of the head, controls the sense of touch, visual attention and voluntary movements.

Occipital

The occipital lobe, located at the back of the head, controls vision.

Temporal

The temporal lobes of the brain, which are located on either side of the head, right above the ears, control hearing, the building up of memory and perceptions of what you see.

Stem

The brain stem, which runs from the middle of the brain and leads to the spinal cord, controls breathing, blood pressure, reaction when startled, the digestive system, sleep patterns, alertness, heart rate and balance.

Cerebellum

The cerebellum, which is at the back of the brain, helps the body coordinate, stay upright and make voluntary movements.
