Consumers who own 1080p HDTVs don't often see the benefits of the higher resolution. HD programming offered by cable and satellite television service providers only offer 720p content. To maximize picture quality on an HDTV, HD DVD and Blu-ray provide native 1080p content.

    Blu-Ray

  1. Created primarily by Sony and Pioneer, Blu-ray disc is the only high-definition disc format available as of September 2009.
  2. Blu-Ray Benefits

  3. Blu-ray offers full 1080p content, HD audio and up to 50 GB storage capacity. Blu-ray discs can also be used as recordable media.
  4. Sony PlayStation 3

  5. Sony's PlayStation 3 gaming console has built-in Blu-ray support. Blu-ray movies can play on the PlayStation right out of the box, and the Blu-ray format allows more gaming content on a single disc.
  6. HD DVD

  7. HD DVDs and players are unavailable for purchase since Toshiba stopped production in February 2008. The format had 15 GB storage capacity per layer and was offered at lower prices than the Blu-ray format.
  8. Xbox 360

  9. The Xbox 360 offered an HD DVD player for purchase as an add-on to the gaming console.
