Pros & Cons of Laptops

Laptops are mobile computers that allow you to take your work wherever you want. They come in sizes from 10-inch netbooks to 18-inch desktop replacement models. Whether a laptop is right for you will depend largely on what you plan to use it for.

  1. Size

    • Laptops have a major advantage over desktops because of their smaller size and weight. When you set up your computer, a desktop will take much more space.

    Portability

    • Laptops can run on power from a circuit or a battery that allows you to run your laptop anywhere for several hours. If you need to be able to bring your computer with you, having a laptop is a major advantage.

    Function

    • Laptop computers do not have the same peak performance capabilities that desktop computers do. But for most people, laptops' performance is more than adequate. But if you are planning to do music, video or graphic editing, or are a serious gamer, a laptop might not have the capabilities you need.

    Cost

    • Laptops will cost considerably more than a desktop with similar features. According to Consumer Reports, laptops also cost more to repair than desktops.

    Potential

    • Laptops are not as easy to upgrade as desktop computers, and according to Consumer Reports, they break down more often.
