Herpes is a common virus infection that affects one in five humans. Most sufferers do not know they have the virus. Since there is no cure, knowing the symptoms of herpes is important in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of the spread of the disease.

    Significance

  1. According to Herpes.com, it is estimated that more than 80 million Americans are affected by the herpes virus.
  2. Identification

  3. Herpes can be contracted by men, women and adolescents.
  4. Types

  5. The two viruses that cause herpes are herpes simplex type 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex type 2 (HSV-2). The former is associated with oral herpes, and the latter is associated with genital herpes.
  6. Transmission

  7. The viruses are transmitted by skin-to-skin contact. This includes kissing, touching or sexual contact.
  8. Symptoms

  9. Symptoms include sensitivity and redness of the skin, swelling, pain, itching, tingling, flu-like symptoms, headaches, bumps and open ulcers. Oral herpes can be identified by cold sores and fever blisters.
  10. Other Forms

  11. Chicken pox and shingles are a form of the herpes virus.
