Herpes is a common virus infection that affects one in five humans. Most sufferers do not know they have the virus. Since there is no cure, knowing the symptoms of herpes is important in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of the spread of the disease.

Types

The two viruses that cause herpes are herpes simplex type 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex type 2 (HSV-2). The former is associated with oral herpes, and the latter is associated with genital herpes.

Transmission

The viruses are transmitted by skin-to-skin contact. This includes kissing, touching or sexual contact.

Symptoms

Symptoms include sensitivity and redness of the skin, swelling, pain, itching, tingling, flu-like symptoms, headaches, bumps and open ulcers. Oral herpes can be identified by cold sores and fever blisters.

Other Forms

Chicken pox and shingles are a form of the herpes virus.
