Simvastatin, a generic form of Zocor, is a prescription medication used to decrease cholesterol levels in the blood. This medication is also used to reduce the risk of death from stroke or heart attack due to increased cholesterol levels.

Common Side Effects

Simvastatin can cause side effects such as constipation, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, upset stomach and gas. Contact your physician if these common side effects become bothersome.

Kidney Problems

Taking simvastatin along with certain other medications can cause kidney failure with symptoms like fever, dark-colored urine, muscle cramps or spasm, muscle stiffness or pain, weakness, tiredness and diarrhea.
Serious Side Effects

Simvastatin can also cause serious side effects such as decreased energy levels, yellowing of the eyes or skin, pain in the upper-right part of the stomach, decreased or lost appetite, unusual bruising or bleeding and flu-like symptoms.
Allergic Reaction

Signs of an allergic reaction to simvastatin include rash, hives, itching, problems swallowing or breathing, hoarseness and swelling of the lower legs, ankles, feet, hands, eyes, lips, tongue, throat or face. Serious side effects should be reported to your physician immediately.
Grapefruit Juice Interaction

Grapefruit juice can increase the amount of simvastatin in your body, which puts you at an increased risk for serious side effects. Do not drink grapefruit juice or eat grapefruit while taking this medication.
