Requirements to Join Army Reserves

Army Reserve members spend time as active duty military on a part-time bases. Reservists are deployable during wartime and usually spend one weekend a month and two weeks annually on active duty. The Army Reserves has certain prerequisites to join.

Age Requirements

Potential Army Reservists must be between the ages of 17 and 39.

Citizen Requirements

Reservist must be U.S. citizen or have a Permanent Resident Visa INS I-151/I-551 to be eligible for enlistment. Visa holders can enlist for only one enlistment unless they become naturalized U.S. citizens or obtain a waiver.

Physically Fit

Reservist must be physically fit and pass a physical exam before becoming eligible for enlistment.

Education

Reservist must have at least a GED to enter the Army but a high school diploma is preferred.

Other Qualifications

Enlisting in the Army Reserves requires you to pass the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test. If an Army Reserve recruit has a criminal record, he or she is individually evaluated and may qualify to receive a waiver
