Side Effects of Homatropine

Homatropine hydrobromide is an eye medication used to relax eye muscles and to cause the pupils to widen (dilate). It is available in the brand Isopto and in generic form, and is commonly applied during eye examinations. Doctors also prescribe homatropine to treat certain eye inflammations.

  1. Function

    • Homatropine is classified as an anti-muscarinic medication. It blocks muscarinic receptors that cause pupil construction and eye focus.

    Short-Term Effects

    • Some people experience temporary eye burning, irritation, redness, stinging or watering when the medication is first applied. There also may be short-term drowsiness or a headache.

    Common Effects

    • Homatropine commonly causes blurred vision, difficulty in eye focusing and sensitivity to bright light. These effects may last for a few hours.

    Serious Effects

    • Some rare but serious side effects are associated with homatropine. These include eye pain, rapid or irregular heartbeat, breathing problems, anxiety, low blood pressure, lightheadedness and problems with balance.

    Contact Lenses

    • People should not wear soft contact lenses during homatropine use because this medication can discolor the lenses.
