Canine Medical Problems
Canine medical problems can range from minor problems, such as ear infections, to complex, life-threatening problems, such as kidney disease. Many of the common medical problems that might afflict your dog do have courses of treatment.

Allergies

Allergies in dogs usually manifest themselves in intense scratching and biting. The cause of dog allergies are classified into four main groups: food, contact, environmental and flea bite. Flea bite allergies are the most common. Treatment is aimed at treating any secondary skin problems with antibiotics, and steroids to relieve the itching.
Ear Problems

Ear problems can be caused by allergies, yeast and ear mites. Allergies cause the ears to become red and inflamed, yeast produces a smelly waxy buildup, and mites cause a black crusty discharge. Treatment depends on the cause, but can include antibiotics, steroids, anti-fungal or an insecticide.

Eye Problems

Many eye problems are hereditary and occur more often in specific breeds. Some common problems include conjunctivitis, ulcers, cherry eye and cataracts. Treatment depends on the cause and can include antibiotics, medicated eye drops and surgery.
Periodontal Disease

Plaque and tarter buildup can cause a dog's gums to become red and swollen. As the disease progresses, your dog might lose his appetite and begin drooling and pawing at his mouth. A veterinarian can perform a thorough cleaning under general anesthetic to remove the plaque and tarter.
Obesity

Overweight dogs are prone to a host of medical conditions, including diabetes, liver disease and arthritis. If you can not easily feel your dog's ribs, he is probably overweight. A veterinarian will develop a feeding and exercise program to help your dog reach a healthful weight.
