Videographer Job Description

Videographers, also known as cameramen or camera operators, are responsible for capturing images and recordings on video tape. Often it is the responsibility of a videographer to bring imagination and artistry to their videos.

  1. Types of Jobs

    • Videographers shoot many different types of video: news and sports, documentaries, films, television and music videos.

    Education

    • Many videographers begin their training with formal education, either individual courses in camera operation or degrees in video producion.

    Entry-Level Jobs

    • Education is enhanced by on-the-job training in entry-level jobs or internships. Entry-level videographers often work as assistants, setting up cameras, lights, and other equipment, before getting behind the camera.

    Self-Employment

    • Videographers have a fairly high (20 percent) self-employment rate.

    Earnings

    • Average videographer earnings are about $40,000 a year, but the top 10 percent of videographers can make over $110,000 annually.

    Job Locations

    • Depending on the nature of their subjects, videographers might travel a great deal (to record events like major news stories) or spend time in one place (as when filming for a film or music video).
