Prognosis of Canine Liver Disorders
The prognosis of canine liver disorders is guarded to poor. The liver is responsible for many vital functions, and therefore any decrease in liver function can be fatal to the canine.
-
Properties
-
The liver is the largest organ in the canine body and is essential to keep the body functioning properly.
Function
-
The liver neutralizes or removes poisons from the body. It also produces immune antibody agents to decrease infection. The liver fights germs and bacteria in the bloodstream.
-
Effects of Liver Disorders
-
Liver disease will affect every other part of the body. Symptoms of liver disease are similar to symptoms of a complete shutdown of other organs or systems. Disorders of the liver can increase viral infections, bacterial infections, cancer and degenerative diseases.
Treatment
-
Treatment for liver disorders is based upon removing all toxic agents from the dog's body that could hurt the liver. Keep the dog confined so that he may rest and by doing this the dog's immune system and healing resources can all be directed toward the liver. Dietary restrictions are essential when treating a liver disorder. The dog should be fed nothing that will make the liver stress or overwork.
Prognosis
-
According to the Canine Liver Disease Foundation, liver disease and liver disorders are one of the most difficult challenges that face veterinarians. Liver disorders typically go unnoticed for periods of time and when brought to the attention of the veterinarian are generally in advanced stages. Liver disease is one of the top five causes of non-accidental death in dogs.
