Problems With Cloning

Discussions that focus on the problems with cloning center on reproductive and therapeutic cloning procedures. Therapeutic and reproductive cloning both involve the removal of the nucleus of an egg and replacing it with genetic material from another cell. Reproductive cloning is done to produce a new animal with the same DNA as another animal. Therapeutic cloning is done to harvest stem cells. These two procedures generate both biological and ethical problems.

  1. Failure Rate

    • One of the major problems with reproductive and therapeutic cloning is that procedures fail at a rate between 97 and over 99 percent.

    Large Offspring Syndrome

    • Cloned animals frequently suffer from large offspring syndrome, in which they are born larger and have larger organs than other members of the species. This can cause problems with breathing and blood flow.

    Early Death

    • Cloned animals frequently die sooner than is typical for members of their species.

    Immune Problems

    • Cloned animals are subject to higher rates of immune problems and diseases.

    Ethics, Law and Religion

    • The prospect of human cloning presents problems regarding the legal status of a clone, a clone's capacity for intellectual autonomy and whether a clone would have a soul.
