Smart Home Technology

Smart home (home automation) technology was inspired when the remote control first started being introduced in houses. Popularity has increased since the turn of the twenty-first century and continues to capture the general public's interest. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Definition

    • A smart home is any house specifically designed to accommodate the needs of the occupant(s) by means of automation. Smart homes can have advanced features such as presence detection or simple features such as voice activation.

    History

    • Home automation became a realized dream when, in 1992, Joe Dada and David Tan started SmartHome, a company that provides consumer electronics for home automation.

    Benefits

    • One of the chief benefits of home automation is the ease with which certain everyday tasks can be completed. However, there are other benefits aside from convenience, such as integrated security systems which automatically alert the police upon intrusion.

    Function

    • The primary function of home automation is to make the occupant(s) of a house as comfortable as possible by providing automatic correspondence to what the occupant(s) desires. An example of this is a room that detects the presence of the occupant and automatically turns on the lights.

    Safety

    • Some sophisticated home automation setups can alert all the occupants of a home of fires and other things that require the occupants to evacuate. These systems also automatically notify the appropriate authorities.
