Careers in Animal Health
There are a number of professions when it comes to the animal health care field, providing plenty of ways for a caring individual to make a difference in the lives of animals.
-
Veterinarian
-
Veterinarians act as doctors for animals, seeing them for routine checkups, physicals and shots, as well as to diagnose any potential problems that may develop down the road. Many veterinarians also perform surgeries like spaying and neutering or dental work.
Vet Techs
-
Veterinary techs assist veterinarians. They collect information about the animal and often help the vet with some of the hands-on work, including giving shots, clipping nails and drawing blood.
-
Chiropractor
-
Chiropractors frequently work with horses, because of the frequent strain on their backs and necks. Equine chiropractors perform adjustments to the spine and vertebrae that relieve pressure and restore flexibility and movement.
Farrier
-
Farriers keep the horse's feet and hooves healthy, shoeing horses that need it and keeping barefoot horses trimmed and crack-free. Improper care of a horse's feet can lead to permanent damage.
Animal Nutritionist
-
You are what you eat, and animal nutritionists make sure that animals are all that they can be. Animal nutritionists make sure that animals are getting a diet that is properly balanced for their species, environment and age.
Groomers
-
Groomers also play an important part in pet and animal health. Keeping a pet clean can be difficult; that's why it's so important to make sure the pet's coat is smooth, healthy and manageable. Groomers will often also trim nails, making sure that the pet doesn't scratch or snag itself.
