Nexium is a prescription drug used for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease and excess stomach acid. It works by healing damage to the esophagus and reducing the amount of acid in the stomach.

  1. Common Side Effects

    • The most commonly occurring side effect in clinical trials was headache. Approximately 5% of the trial subjects reported having headaches. Other common side effects were abdominal pain, diarrhea and nausea.

    Rare Side Effects

    • Nexium also has been known to cause several uncommon side effects as well. These include bowel irregularity, constipation, esophageal disorder, frequent stools, gastroenteritis, hiccups and vomiting. These side effects are generally mild and shouldn't cause much discomfort.

    Adverse Side Effects

    • In isolated cases Nexium use has resulted in more adverse side effects such as anorexia, apathy, increased appetite, confusion, depression, dizziness, hypertonia, nervousness, hypoesthesia, impotence, insomnia, migraine, migraine aggravated, paresthesia, sleep disorder, somnolence, tremor, vertigo and vision problems.

    What to Do

    • If you encounter an adverse or debilitating side effects while taking Nexium, contact your medical professional immediately. Nexium is generally prescribed for a period of 4-8 weeks. Mild side effects should dissipate upon completion of your treatment.

    Warning

    • If you are allergic to esomeprazole or benzimidazole, do not take Nexium, as you may have an allergic reaction to the medication. If you are pregnant or believe you may be, consult with your doctor before you begin taking Nexium.
