What Are the Causes of Teen Violence?

According to author William Fleeman in his book "Managing Teen Anger and Violence," teen violence is a growing problem in the United States. The underlying causes of teen violence are unchanged since the creation of an independent juvenile justice system in the 20th century.

  1. Substance Abuse and Addiction

    • Abuse of drugs or alcohol contributes to teen violence. Violence stems from actions taken while intoxicated as well as crimes committed to obtain intoxicants.

    Mental Illness

    • Teens afflicted with mental health issues and conditions show a marked propensity for violent behavior.

    Unstable Home Life

    • Teens living in unstable homes where parents are neglectful and abusive tend toward acting out violently.

    Peer Pressure

    • Some teens are motivated to engage in reckless and violent conduct as the result of pressure from peers.

    Education

    • Many teens who are not doing well scholastically tend toward violent conduct in and outside of school.
