Different Vegetarian Diets

Vegetarianism is a popular diet choice for both the health conscious and those concerned with animal rights. Several types of vegetarianism are popular, all of which require discipline and planning.

  1. Features

    • All forms of vegetarianism involve the avoidance of animal protein consumption in favor of plant proteins, such as soy, beans, nuts and legumes.

    Benefits

    • A properly balanced vegetarian diet is high in fiber and low in calories and saturated fats. It can help with weight management and the lowering of cholesterol.

    Strict Vegetarian Diets

    • Fruitarians only eat the fruiting parts of plants, such as tomatoes and strawberries, and avoid consuming plants that are destroyed when harvested, such as leafy greens and carrots. In the raw food diet, only raw, unprocessed plant foods are eaten.

    Moderate Diets

    • Lacto-vegetarians add milk to their diets, and ovo-lacto-vegetarians consume both milk and eggs. Pescetarians allow for the consumption of fish, and semi-vegetarians avoid red meat but eat chicken and fish.

    Veganism

    • Vegans are typically concerned with the treatment of animals and avoid eating animal products, including eggs, milk and honey, and wearing clothes made from animal products, including leather and silk.

    Considerations

    • An improperly balanced vegetarian diet can lead to deficiencies in important vitamins and proteins, so it is important to do thorough research and/or consult with a physician before beginning this lifestyle.
