Dangers of Alcohol Abuse

Alcohol actually has several health benefits, and in some countries, children are even allowed some wine or other alcohol with evening meals. Although alcohol is consumed frequently at parties and at dinners, many people fail to recognize that it is a drug, and, like other drugs, is dangerous when abused.

Liver Problems

Abuse of alcohol can cause such problems as cirrhosis, hepatitis and alcoholic fatty liver, according to the American Liver Foundation.

Neurological Dangers

Alcohol use causes impaired vision, lack of coordination, short-term memory loss and blackouts. These symptoms often occur when intoxicated, but can become permanent if alcohol is continually abused.

Cardio Dangers

Abuse increases heart rate and blood pressure, and creates a higher risk of heart failure and strokes, according to the American Council for Drug Education.

Respiratory Problems

Tuberculosis is a disease of the lungs that is often related to the abuse of alcohol. Other respiratory problems caused by alcohol abuse include respiratory failure and decline, lung abscesses and pneumonia.

Additional Physical Dangers

Alcohol abuse endangers the gastrointestinal system, kidneys, immune system and pancreas.

Psychological

Alcohol abuse can cause problems in interpersonal relationships. People abusing alcohol will often alienate family and friends.
