What Is Colon Disease?

Colon problems can range from uncomfortable bowel symptoms like cramping and flatulence to dangerous diseases like colorectal cancer. In severe cases, a doctor must send a tube into the colon to examine it.

  1. Large Intestine

    • This part of the body is where wastes are sent to be expelled from the body. The large intestine is also known as the colon and the bowels.

    Types

    • Types of colon diseases are colorectal cancer, colonic polyps, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis and irritable bowel syndrome.

    Diagnosis

    • Colon diseases are diagnosed using a colonoscopy, which involves the insertion of a long tube that checks the colon for problems.

    Treatment

    • Mild cases of colon diseases are often treated with laxatives. More serious colon diseases are treated through surgery. Alternative health specialists recommend that colon hydrotherapy be performed to keep the colon healthy.

    Colon Health

    • Colons are kept healthy by the consumption of probiotics, fiber and water. Antioxidants also help prevent the occurrence of colon cancer.
