Basic Facts About Umbria, Italy

In central Italy lies the Umbria region. Because of its scenic landscape and the neighboring Tuscany region, the Umbria region has become a popular vacation destination. The area is hilly and mountainous with many valleys. The Apennines Mountains cross Umbria, and there is a large lake, the Trasimeno. The area provides tourists with ample opportunities for sightseeing as well as activities such as hiking, biking and boating.

  1. Cities

    • The Umbria region includes the cities of Assisi, Terni, Orvieto, Spoleto, Gubbo and Todi. The city of Perugia is the capital of Umbria.

    Archaeology

    • The Umbria region is rich with traces of the Etruscan civilization and the Ancient Umbrii and other pre-Roman population. In Umbria, there are three national archaeological museums.

    Nature

    • According to the Umbrian Tourism Board, Umbria is known as the "green heart of Italy." It is home to the Falls of the Marmore, the highest waterfall in Italy. Many natural springs, rivers and lakes surround the area.

    Food and Wine

    • Food and wine are a large part of the Umbria region. The area is home to numerous vineyards and olive groves. Each city boasts its own blend of rich cuisine.

    Weather

    • The average temperature during the winter months is about 40 to 50 degrees F. The summer months average about 75 to 85 degrees F. Spring and autumn also are mild, with temperatures ranging from 60 to 70 degrees F and 50 to 60 degrees F, respectively.
