Types of Sore Throat

Having a sore throat is uncomfortable. Often it is hard to swallow and speak. There are multiple reasons for experiencing this illness, and a doctor should be consulted for proper diagnosis.

  1. Environment

    • A sore throat is often the result of airborne allergens. Smoke and a lack of humidity also can lead to irritation of the throat.

    Viral

    • Viral infections, including the common cold and flu, can result in a sore throat. One of many symptoms of HIV is a sore or irritated throat.

    Bacterial

    • Strep throat and tonsillitis are two examples of bacterial infections that result in a sore throat. Symptoms of diphtheria also include a sore throat, but the disease is rare in the United States.

    Strain

    • Overuse of the vocal cords may lead to a sore or irritated throat. Singing or yelling for long periods are examples of situations that may lead to strain.

    Growths

    • Polyps or tumors may develop in the throat region, causing irritation. These growths my be benign or malignant, and most are removable through surgical procedures.
