What Are Vietnamese Fruits & Vegetables?

Vietnam is on the eastern coast of Southeast Asia. Its location gives it two different climates, so the growing seasons vary by geographic location. Vietnam grows both exotic fruits and vegetables as well as ones common in the U.S. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Fruits

    • Many Vietnamese fruits look like something from a science fiction movie but are extremely flavorful. Vietnamese fruits include lychee, pithead, bananas, pomelo, papaya, guava, oranges and pineapples.

    Vegetables

    • Vietnamese vegetables include hot peppers, tomatoes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, white yams, yard long beans, spiny chayote, cabbage, carrots, soybeans, rice and yellow onions, to name but a few.

    Herbs

    • While not truly a spice or a vegetable, there are many herbs eaten raw in salads or as garnishes in other dishes. Some Vietnamese herbs are elephant ears, fish mint, edible chrysanthemum, lemon grass, and rice paddy herbs.

    Growing Season

    • Northern Vietnam has a shorter growing season due to a colder climate. Southern Vietnam has a long growing season because of its tropical climate.

    Exportation

    • Vietnam exports several different foods, including rice, corn, potatoes, soybeans, coffee, tea, bananas, cashews and sugarcane.
