- Feeling persistently sad and empty nearly every day is characteristic of depression disorders. The mood disturbance is coupled with at least some of the other symptoms to be considered for diagnosis.
- Losing interest in life activities and being unable to experience pleasure is central to depression. A person may stop doing things he used to enjoy.
- Oversleeping or experiencing insomnia are both characteristic of depression disorders. Sleep patterns may fluctuate as evidenced by not sleeping at night then oversleeping during the day.
- Feeling lethargic and consistently wiped out is a symptom of depression disorders. These symptoms can result in low motivation and the inability to concentrate.
- Thinking about death, dying or killing oneself (suicidal ideation) can be part of the experience of depression. Attempts at suicide may result if depression is left untreated.
