Guidelines to Re-Enlist in the Marine Corps
Marines who wish to re-enlist face hurdles posed by age brackets, re-enlistment codes and recommendations. While guidelines may appear strict, waivers are available to worthy Marines on a limited basis.
-
Age
-
The maximum age to enlist in the active Marine Corps is 28. Generally, prior service members can subtract the years they have spent serving in the military from their age to determine their eligibility age.
MOS Competition
-
There are only so many slots available per MOS (military occupation codes) for first time re-enlisting Marines, and applications for an overfilled MOS will be reviewed by a board to determine who is retained and who must learn a new job.
-
Re-Enlistment Code
-
Each Marine is assigned a re-enlistment code, determined by their record of service and qualifications. Some codes render a Marine ineligible for re-enlistment, while some declare the Marine to be a highly desirable re-enlistment candidate.
Recommendation
-
The commanding officer of an actively serving Marine must recommend the Marine for re-enlistment.
Waivers
-
Re-enlistment waivers can be issued for Marines who exceed restrictions on age, dependents and their mental, moral or physical state. Paperwork is required and must include a recruiter's recommendation, command interview and documentation of the issue being waived.
