Zocor, also available as the generic simvastatin, is a medication used to lower cholesterol by blocking its production in the body. It specifically works against low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or "bad" cholesterol. Elevated levels of LDL can lead to hardening of the arteries and heart disease.

The most common reactions are constipation, nausea and abdominal discomfort, diarrhea and heartburn. It may also cause muscle weakness and lack of energy.
Serious Side Effects

Potentially serious side effects include greatly increased sensitivity to light, kidney failure, liver disease and swelling beneath the skin. In rare cases, it can cause muscle and skeletal tissue to break down.

Interactions

Avoid alcohol while taking Zocor, as it can increase the level of triglycerides in your blood and may add to the risk of liver disease. Tell your doctor about any other medications you are taking to prevent harmful interactions.
Existing Conditions

Zocor cannot be used by those with liver disease. It should be used with caution in patients with diabetes, kidney disease, muscle disorders or hypothyroidism.
