When Was Wells Fargo Established?

Wells Fargo, now a major international financial institution with headquarters in San Francisco, began over 150 years ago in California during the California Gold Rush.

  1. Founding

    • On March 18, 1852, Henry Wells and William Fargo created a joint stock company in New York City to perform banking and express services in distant California.

    Henry Wells

    • Born on December 12, 1805, in Thetford, Vermont, Wells worked in the express postal business that competed with the U.S. postal service. Besides being a successful businessman, he was a generous philanthropist and died with an estate of only $40,000.

    William Fargo

    • Born on May 20, 1818, in Pompey, New York, William Fargo also worked in the express industry. And aside from his business ventures with Wells, Fargo invested in the railroad industry.

    Wells Fargo Museums

    • There are several Wells Fargo History Museums on the west coast. They display original Concord Coaches, business documents, early photos, mining tools and more.

    Corporate Symbol

    • Wells Fargo helped start the Overland Mail Company (O.M.C.) stageline in 1858. The O.M.C. was under Wells Fargo's control by 1860, and moved north to the central overland route--the route of the famed Pony Express, which became the company's symbol.
