Cell Facts

Cells are the microscopic building blocks of the human body. They play both a functional and a structural role. Cells vary greatly in function, shape and size. Their function is closely related to their structure.

Cell Membrane

A membrane that is made of proteins and phospholipids covers cells. This divides the inner parts of the cell from the material outside of the cell.

Nucleus

Most cells have one nucleus, which is the control center of the cell. Mature red blood cells are the only cells that do not have a nucleus.

Cytoplasm

Cytoplasm is a jelly-like substance that fills the inside of the cell. Its only function is to cushion the specialized parts, or organelles, of the cell.

Organelles

Organelles work together to regulate, control, transport and manufacture secretions for the cell.

Cell Reproduction

Cells reproduce, or divide, by one of two processes: mitosis or meiosis. Meiosis involves reproduction, while mitosis involves cell repair and maintenance.

Tumors

When cells do not divide in the usual way, tumors may develop. Tumors, or neoplasms, are the uncontrolled, abnormal growth of cells.
