Danger of Ginko Biloba

Ginkgo Biloba is an herbal supplement used for a variety of health benefits. Ginkgo has not been evaluated by the FDA; therefore, risks associated with it are not entirely known. The manufacturing of ginkgo is not regulated, which raises additional concern for consumer safety.

  1. Dangers of Direct Contact

    • Ginkgo seeds and the pulp from the ginkgo fruit can be toxic. Severe reactions have been reported in individuals who have handled ginkgo pulp and include redness, itching, swelling and blistering.

    Abnormal Clotting of Blood

    • People often take ginkgo to improve circulation. While this can be beneficial, in individuals with bleeding/clotting disorders or taking medication for such, may experience the serious side effect of delays in clotting.

    Product Contamination

    • The manufacturing of health supplements not regulated by the FDA has resulted in product contamination of numerous toxicities, including other drugs. This could prove harmful, or even fatal.

    Unknown Reactions

    • Ginkgo is a derivative of the ginkgo tree, most commonly used in the form of a concentrated extract. Individuals with plant allergies should avoid taking ginkgo supplements due to potentially unknown adverse reactions.

    Ginkgo Side Effects

    • The following serious side effects have been reported: difficulty breathing, swelling of face, lips, or tongue, hives, irregular heartbeat, cramps, muscle spasms, seizures, and loss of consciousness. Seizures, unconsciousness, and death are symptoms of overdose.

    Ginkgo and Other Drugs

    • Taking Ginkgo with prescription and nonprescription drugs may alter the effectiveness and absorption of the other drugs by the body. Consulting your health care provider is recommended prior to taking ginkgo biloba.
