Does Psoriasis Itch?

Psoriasis is an immune disorder that causes the skin to form thick, silvery patches over various parts of the body. Psoriasis may itch or burn.

  1. Course of Disease

    • The course and intensity varies among patients, but usually the symptoms are chronic and long-term.

    Development of Disease

    • Inherited psoriasis usually starts in older children and young adults and continues. Non-hereditary psoriasis can develop during middle age and is more unpredictable. Psoriasis worsens when the patient scratches or injures the skin.

    Affected Areas

    • The most common areas for the rash to spread are the knees, elbows, palms, soles of the feet, lower back and scalp.

    Most Common Form

    • Psoriasis most commonly appears as silvery patches of skin called plaques.

    Other Forms

    • The rash can also be shiny and red, appearing in folds of skin. Psoriasis can also form noninfectious blisters or reddish, scaly areas of skin.

    Treatment

    • Psoriasis treatments vary. They range from topical applications like steroids to ultraviolet light to oral medications such as antibiotics and immunosuppressants.
