Canine Dehydration Symptoms
Canine dehydration is a serious issue that can become life-threatening if not properly treated. Understanding the symptoms of dehydration can help you get your dog the help she needs.
-
Skin
-
Dogs who are properly hydrated have skin which will bounce back instantly. In dogs who are dehydrated, the skin will form a tent whenever pinched or picked up.
Dryness
-
Depending on the severity of dehydration, there may be several areas which are abnormally dry. For example, there may be dry gums, dry eyes or a dry nose present in your dog.
-
Eyes
-
You may also notice that the eyes appear to have sunken into the face. Fortunately, this is not permanent and the eyes will return to normal during rehydration.
Capillary Refill Times
-
Press your finger down lightly on your dog's gums until the area turns pale beneath your finger. In a well-hydrated dog, the capillaries (blood vessels) will refill instantly. In dehydrated dogs, it will take noticeably longer for the capillaries to refill.
Behavioral Changes
-
Many dogs display changes in their drinking or urination habits. Your dog may be suffering dehydration if he has been excessively urinating. If you notice any of these signs in your dog, contact a veterinarian immediately.
