Ostrich Fun Facts

The ostrich is the largest species of bird on Earth and the heaviest, a creature that lives in Africa. The ostrich is unable to fly but can run very fast, aided by the structure of its feet, which possess only two toes.

  1. Speed

    • This flightless bird can run as fast as 43 mph for short stretches and keep up at 31 mph for long distances. One stride of an ostrich covers between 10 to 16 feet.

    Function

    • An ostrich's wings are able to give it balance as it runs and changes direction. They are also vital in courtship displays.

    Size

    • The eye of an ostrich has a diameter of 2 inches, making it the biggest such organ of a terrestrial animal.

    Defenses

    • The 4-inch long claw that an ostrich has on each foot affords it protection against predators and the bird can kick hard enough to easily disable or kill an enemy.

    Habits

    • Shiny objects hold a special attraction to ostriches, and they will curiously peck at them. Ostriches will willingly swallow small stones to help them grind up the food that enters their gizzard.

    Misconceptions

    • Despite the prevailing belief ostriches bury their heads in the sand when threatened what they actually do is fall down and hold their long necks and head flat to the surface, making it appear like it has buried its head.
