Role of Health Inspector

Health inspectors, also known as health and safety specialists, make sure that businesses and industries follow the health and safety guidelines. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, or BLS, around 40 percent of all health inspectors in the United States work for the federal or state government.

  1. Duties

    • The typical duties that a health and safety inspector may perform include inspecting machinery, testing air and water quality, testing work environment for chemical or biological hazards, and designing safe work places.

    • The role of a health and safety inspectors depends on the industry. For example, mine examiners inspect mines for health hazards and toxic chemicals, while environmental protection officers ensure that industrial waste and materials hazardous to the environment are properly handled.

    Report Writing

    • The health and safety specialists prepare documents and reports provided by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Specialized health and safety inspectors may also prepare health and safety manuals, procedures and policies.

    • The BLS expects the employment rate for health and safety specialists to grow by 9 percent between 2006 and 2016.

    • According to the BLS, the average yearly salary of health inspectors in the United States was $63,030 as of May 2008.
