Information on the Human Brain
The human brain and the spinal cord make up the central nervous system. The central nervous system works with the peripheral nervous system, composed of nerves, to control your body's movements, sensations and responses to the environment.
-
Spinal Cord
-
The spinal cord contains bundles of sensory nerves that transport messages between the different parts of the brain and the rest of the body.
Brain Stem
-
The Bryn Mawr College website says the brain stem, composed of the midbrain, pons and medulla, controls breathing, your heartbeat and your blood pressure, vital human functions.
-
The Cerebrum
-
The cerebrum, the largest section of the human brain, is divided into four lobes---frontal, partial, occipital and tempera---and affects thoughts, actions, speech and visual processing.
The Cerebellum
-
The Bryn Mawr College website calls the cerebellum the "little brain" because of its similarity to the cerebrum. The cerebrum's two hemispheres control movement, posture and balance.
Limbic System
-
The limbic system of the human brain contains the thalamus, hypothalamus, amygdale and hippocampus. These control emotions, thirst, hunger, learning, memory and spatial relationships in the world around you.
