Schnauzer Skin Disorders

While some Schnauzers may remain perfectly healthy throughout life, many are prone to certain skin disorders. These conditions can be caused by several different factors, so it is important to speak with a veterinarian if your Schnauzer has developed one of them.

  1. Schnauzer Bumps

    • Schnauzer Bumps, also known as Schnauzer Comedone Syndrome, causes the formation of several blackheads along the Schnauzer's back. Mild cases of Comedone Syndrome will not require treatment, but if a bacterial infection develops, you will need to speak with your veterinarian regarding proper treatment.

    Canine Dermatitis

    • Canine dermatitis occurs when the Schnauzer's skin becomes inflamed. This skin disorder may be caused by the Schnauzer's sensitivity to something specific, such as a plant, animal or shampoo. The symptoms include intense itching and hair loss.

    Parasites

    • As with any other dog breed, Schnauzers are at risk for picking up parasites, such as fleas, ear mange, mites, ticks and lice. If your Schnauzer has this skin disorder, you will notice him scratching and biting at his skin regularly.

    Allergies

    • Allergies are among the most common causes of Schnauzer skin disorders. A wide range of substances may cause an allergic reaction in your Schnauzer, including pollen, mold, animals and dust mites. Symptoms include scratching, biting, chewing and licking the skin constantly, and sometimes rubbing the face against the carpet.

    Ringworm

    • Ringworm is a fungus that lives in dead skin, nails and hair. The most common signs of this skin disorder are round patches of baldness on the Schnauzer. Ringworm is highly infectious, and will need to be treated with a fungicidal shampoo or antibiotics.
