Common Traffic Signs

The traffic signs that you see on the road are there to help prevent confusion on the road. You need to be thoroughly familiar with these signs in order to pass your driving test and drive safely.

  1. Stop

    • You must come to a full stop at a stop sign (at least three seconds) and check to verify that opposing traffic has also fully stopped before proceeding.

    Yield

    • You do not have to stop at a yield sign unless there is a car coming in the lane where you plan to merge.

    Passing

    • "No Passing" signs are commonly found on two-lane country roads where a driver may be tempted to move into the opposing lane of traffic to pass a slow-moving vehicle. The purpose of this sign is to prevent head-on collisions.

    No Turn on Red

    • If you see a "No Turn On Red" sign, it is illegal to turn before the light turns green again. Some signs have restrictions for certain hours of the day (for example, between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.).

    School Zone

    • School-zone signs warn drivers that they must slow to a lower speed (usually 15 or 20 mph) during school hours. The sign may flash during school hours.
